Electro-Optical System Director Founding Team Member
Spiral Photonics is hiring a hands-on system leader to own the build of our breakthrough IR sensing platform. This is a doer’s role: solve hard engineering problems, drive R&D to working hardware, and ready the system for production. As a founding team member, you will lead a complex electro-optical program grounded in a technological breakthrough developed over a decade of academic research.
What You’ll Do:
● Lead the design, assembly, integration, and testing of a novel IR optical imaging system
● Own the system from prototype to production readiness, including performance validation and reliability testing
● Define system related specifications based on customer requirements
● Translate Spiral’s optical concept into a robust, field-tested product
● Work across disciplines - optics, mechanics, electronics, and software - to integrate a high-performance system
● Build and execute R&D and validation plans on tight timelines
● Support early customer engagements with working demos and system-level proof
● Take ownership and initiative, with a problem solving state of mind
● Help define production paths, manufacturing readiness, and system robustness
● 6+ years of hands-on experience in EO system development (cameras, lasers, sensors, etc.)
● Direct experience in optical assembly, system calibration, and hardware validation
● Demonstrated ability to build complex systems
● Deep system-level thinking with an execution mindset
● Understanding of thermal imaging, nonlinear optics, spectroscopy or active laser sensing - strong advantage
● Familiarity with computer vision and imaging analytics - advantage
● Dedicated, high ownership, independent, and thrives in a fast-moving startup
● B.Sc./M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mechanical Engineering, or similar
● 81 or other elite technology unit background - advantage
Why Join Us? This is your chance to build something first-of-its-kind. At Spiral, we’re creating technology that could redefine how humans and machines sense the world. You’ll work at the edge of science and engineering - getting real systems to work in real conditions. If you want to build hardware that matters, join us.
